The Schoolhouse

Chapter 1

In the beginning the schoolmaster formulated a principle. For years he tested the principle until he was satisfied of its soundness. After the testing period the schoolmaster wrote down the principle in a book and read it aloud. The principle was perfect. The schoolmaster was filled with joy every time he read and meditated on the beauty and perfection of the principle. He was happy. He lacked nothing but he wanted others to feel the way he felt. He wanted others to benefit from the principle and appreciate it as much as he did. “How can I introduce my principle into the world?” thought the schoolmaster. “I know. I will shape young minds. I will make sure they understand the sacred secret from a young age.” The schoolmaster decided this was the best method to ensure they lived happy lives.

The first step would be to find the right location. He scouted out various tracts of land but when he tested their quality using his principle none were good enough. Finally the schoolmaster came upon a tract of land in an isolated area. He had a good feeling about this area. He tested the land using his principle and discovered his initial belief was correct. The land passed all of the necessary conditions the principle imposed upon it. “I have found it,” reflected the schoolmaster. “This is the location where the schoolhouse will be constructed.” The schoolmaster buys the land and marks off the limits of his property.

Standing in the middle of his newly acquired property the schoolmaster opens the book and begins to read the principle. He closes the book and begins stroking his white beard while reflecting. The average person perhaps would jump right in and begin construction. However the schoolmaster is not the average person. He decides to first choose his faculty. This decision was in perfect harmony with the principle. The schoolmaster set up a table and two chairs in the middle of the tract of land. When the applicants arrived the schoolmaster could always tell right away if they we’re right for the schoolhouse. Some were distracted by the unusual location selected to conduct the interview. They were dismissed immediately. “If they can not appreciate the perfection of this location,” reasoned the schoolmaster. “They will not appreciate the beauty of the principle.” During the interview process he noted the applicant’s initial reaction to the principle. The schoolmaster would then spend the majority of the interview process explaining the intricacies of the principle and answering questions. At the end of each interview he shook hands with the applicant and told them he would contact them after the entire interview process was completed. The schoolmaster already knew however whether or not he had found his faculty member. The decision was absolute. It was determined by the principle. After the necessary period of time the schoolmaster contacted all of the candidates and hired twelve teachers, the school principal, and the supporting staff. Afterward he looked over his faculty and sensed his emotions being stirred. The schoolmaster couldn’t stop himself from smiling joyously.

Now that his faculty was chosen the schoolmaster decided the next step was to hire an architect. From this point on his faculty would be present to witness every step of the building process. They were there when he interviewed hundreds of architects and finally made his choice. The architects that were rejected didn’t understand the importance of the principle. They always asked for more details on what exactly the schoolmaster wanted. But after having the principle explained to him once the architect that was chosen had no follow up questions. He knew exactly what was required by the principle. The faculty observed this and agreed that he was the perfect architect for this particular project. He swiftly but thoroughly drew up the blue print. The speed in which the plans were designed was not out of haste but rather out of a sense of certainty in what was required. The plans were approved and construction began on schedule. The schoolmaster, architect and faculty  were present every day of construction. Everyone observed how in sync the blueprint was with the principle. Some days the architect would leave the blueprint at home and work directly from the book that he had borrowed from the schoolmaster. Finally the work was completed and a single story wooden schoolhouse painted white with green trim stood erect in the middle of the isolated tract of land. The faculty along with the architect and his workers slowly walked around and throughout the structure. Finally they all congregated around the schoolmaster. A spontaneous burst of applause and joyful shouting rang out across the land, the like of which had never been heard before.

Another Kafkaesqe Moment

Yesterday my wife and I experienced another kafkaesque moment. As I explain in a previous post the term kafkaesque is a literary description of a work that has a similar feel to that of a work by the writer Franz Kafka. His works give the reader a surreal feeling of subtle terror. He does this by throwing his characters into situations where they are confronted with unacceptable or unreasonable circumstances. The reader is forced to accept the unacceptable because of the nonchalant way the characters including even the protagonist accept the situation. For instance being transformed overnight with no explanation into a giant bug. Or being placed under arrest but refused the right to know under what charge or who is bringing the charge against you.

Every Monday and Friday morning I teach an English class to a young man from the republic of Guinea. I always now carry my documents in my back pocket for easy access if I’m about to be arrested. It’s a good thing I did too because that Monday morning ‘Control of Foreigners’ was in full swing. Often just called ‘Control’ the measures which include checkpoints and random vehicle searches are thought to prevent anti-terrorist activity. This particular ‘Control’ has everyone confused, as Chinese who are not usually targeted and even natives are being stopped and questioned. Anyways we arrived at our location without being stopped by the police. However when we stepped out of the car we noticed people being questioned some already wearing handcuffs. My pupil had a worried look on his face as he peered through the crack of his iron door. We were ushered in and he began bolting the door. Just as he secured the first bolt, someone began kicking the door and shouting.

“Open the door! If you don’t open we’re going to break it down!”

This, by the way is unusual as home invasions are rare. But as I said before this particular Control is unusual. As far as we could tell anything was on the table. Even home raids. Nevertheless after a few tense minutes the police drove away with the ‘suspects’ they had arrested. Considering all that had just happened (it was my students cousin they had arrested) I wasn’t sure if he was up to having the lesson. Who am I kidding? I wasn’t sure if I was up to giving the lesson. But my student pulled out his chalkboard and secured it to the wall. Minutes later we were practicing the unique English ‘R’ sound which is difficult for many French speakers. After the hour long lesson my student changed his mind and decided to open his store. He had resolved to stay closed all day but his customers wouldn’t hear of it. They showed up and chided him for being a coward. They acted as if the morning events were no big deal. I would describe the entire event as another kafkaesque moment.

MANKIND’S SEARCH FOR THE SUPERMAN

When NAPOLEON conquered Europe he pretended he was JULIUS CAESAR. When Caesar conquered the known world he pretended he was ALEXANDER THE GREAT. When Alexander conquered the world he was pretending to be a Greek demigod.

Alexander was a Macedonian pretending to be a Greek. Napoleon was a Corsican  Pretending to be a Frenchman. ADOLF HITLER was an Austrian pretending to be a German. STALIN was a Georgian pretending to be a Russian.

Why couldn’t these conquerors just be themselves? Because they knew that they were only men and what was needed was a superman. They borrowed from idealized representations of man’s greatness. History is always full of this kind of material because it was written by man and man can’t help but envision himself as a superman.

Since the day Adam decided he wanted to be like God man has striven to prove he is more than just a man. The Egyptian Pharaohs were considered gods. So great was the Babylonian superman’s arrogance The dynasty is portrayed in ancient writings as bragging: “To the heavens I shall go up. Above the stars of God I shall lift up my throne, and I shall sit down upon the mountain of meeting, in the remotest parts of the north….I shall make myself resemble the Most High.” The Medo-Persian king was also viewed as a superman.  Laws passed in the Persian monarch’s name could not be revoked such was his supposed infallibility. Greece believed strongly in the superman. These supermen were considered to be a combination of man and Greek god. HERCULES is an example of such a superman. Another Greek example is that of Greece’s greatest ruler Alexander the Great. He was rumored to have been conceived by the union of his mother and a god behind the back of her husband Philip II then current king of Macedonia. Thus Alexander, half-man, half-god was considered destined to become the  next superman.

AND THEN THERE WAS CAESAR…

In this article we’ll focus on the historic timeline from Caesar to our day. Caesar is a preferable starting point considering he was arguably the pinnacle of man’s arrogant claim of being a superman.

Extending from Western Europe to Northern Africa and Western Asia, The Roman Empire was so large that it became difficult for one superman to rule it. Eventually one of the Caesars decided to divide it into two halves with one of his super sons ruling the western half while his other super son ruled the eastern half. After centuries of arrogant rule with its most powerful weapon the Roman Ego, finally the Germanic tribes called its bluff and the western half of the Roman Empire fell. The eastern half would last much longer but eventually it too would fall. Is that the last we will hear of Caesar the superman and his absolute rule? No.

Modern nation states couldn’t let go of Caesar’s superman. The Russians influenced by the eastern Roman Empire created THE CZAR which is Russian for Caesar. The Germans influenced by the western half of the Roman Empire created THE KAISER which is German for; you guessed it, Caesar.

Modern nation states, politicians and religious organizations like THE CATHOLIC CHURCH are expected to be infallible which is why the church is forced to wait generations after its members have long since died before admitting any errors. (ie. THE INQUISITIONS)

German philosophers like FRIEDRICH NIETZSCHE took the search for a superman to a whole new level by claiming that man needed to break free from his mortal fetters at all costs. He regarded any other striving except pushing ones self to the next evolutionary step (that of the superman) was slave mentality. He wasn’t just all talk. He pushed himself with this aim. The result? Nietzsche went straight out of his mind.

Both Hitler and BENITO MUSSOLINI believed in Nietzsche’s superman or in German the übermensch. They also believed in his diametrically opposed counterpart the üntermensch  or subhuman.

Modern day Neitzches like rapper KANYE WEST encourage a whole new generation to feed their egos on the idea of the superman. Using both lyrics and behavior such rappers persuade young ones into believing that humility is equivalent to weakness. They also enforce the age old belief that man is not enough. In order to succeed you must be a superman.

In my new book ‘METAPHYSICAL MAN THE DON QUIJOTE OF THE DIGITAL AGE’ I try to examine our current belief in ourselves as supermen and women. The book is an attempt to suggest the unpopular idea that perhaps man doesn’t need to kill himself trying to become the superman. Maybe man, real man is enough. Maybe as long as he’s trying to be his best, man is great just as he is.

Friedrich Nietzsche

“I assess the power of a will by how much resistance, pain, torture it endures and knows how to turn it to it’s advantage.”

– Friedrich Nietzsche

“When we arrived at the couple’s apartment we began to explore right away. Josie and I were very anxious to examine every square inch of the place but Vincent was very cautious. “Guys I have a terrible feeling about these people and this place. We should escape or at least hide until we’re sure it’s safe” he would say. Josie on the other hand had no reservations whatsoever. “I think they’re nice. They pet me and let me smell them and they smell like really nice people.” Vincent darted his eyes toward his sister. “You think everyone is nice.” he said scornfully. “Everyone is nice!” she cheerfully responded. We explored every square inch of our new space avoiding when possible the humans.”…..

‘Daily life in Central Africa’

I want to think OM from HarsH ReaLiTy for giving me an opportunity to share a day in the life of William Chasterson in Central Africa.

Your probably asking, “William what the heck is ‘Daily life in…'” Well let me explain. It’s your opportunity to showcase where you’re from. Show us your hometown. Click here for details on how you can participate.

I’ve been doing volunteer work in Central Africa for almost two years now. It would be remiss of me not to mention a particular aspect of daily life here, and that’s police brutality. This is especially on my mind in light of recent events. First I’ll mention something that happened to me the other day. As I’ve mentioned in previous posts I rent an apartment connected to a bar which features loud revelries until the break of dawn. Here’s a picture of the front of my house on a typical morning after such an event.

Anyways the other day the loud music was overshadowed by shouting and noisy activity surrounding the house. I ran to the back window and overheard a man threatening to kill someone over being accused of lying. Though he was worked up his neighbors managed to wrestle him away from his victim. The shouting continued however and carried into the front of the house where the entire neighborhood seemed to be gathered. We turned off all the lights and discreetly peeked out the window as we heard a physical confrontation. People were yelling, “You are murderers!” The police showed up and we heard more shouting, threats and the cocking of arms. I called my friend who’s sister is a police and she advised us not to leave the house. If someone knocks on the door we were to call her brother. Eventually the situation calmed and the police arrested someone after giving him a thorough beat down. The next morning I heard that my friend was in the hospital. The same night he was offering us advice on avoiding a violent confrontation he was attacked by the police and beaten unconscious. He’s a taxi driver so he innocently picked up a female passenger who hailed him. All at once another car wildly swerved out of nowhere and started chasing them. At this point the girl nonchalantly mentions that it’s her jealous boyfriend that is chasing her. My friend wants to do the right thing so he drives to a check point figuring the girl will be safe in the presence of the police. The girl gets out and walks towards the police while the pursuers jump out of their car and begin assaulting my friend. There are four men who beat him while the girl’s boyfriend who by the way is armed takes the lead. The police/soldiers at the checkpoint stand by idly while my friend is mercilessly beaten unconscious. Apparently the girl’s boyfriend was some sort of high ranking officer which makes him above the law. My friend was told that the aggressor was locked up and the other men fled the scene. But most likely no one was arrested.

WANTED: LITERARY AGENT

My views on literary agents are as follows. A writer-agent relationship is a partnership where the agent benefits as much as the writer. An agent should take on an writer only after having read and coming to believe strongly in the writer’s voice. I believe that a writer should never pay an upfront fee to have his work read or reviewed by an agent. Once money passes hands a conflict of interest is created. The agent’s opinions are now suspect. There’s no way the writer can objectively be sure the  appraisal isn’t just as a result of the payment. A true agent makes his or her money off of a percentage of the writer’s work. Because their payment is dependent on the sale of the writer’s work they are motivated to only represent writer’s they think will sale. This is a risk they are willing to take because they believe in the writer’s voice.

That being said, I, William Chasterson am currently seeking representation. If you’ve read my work and feel you can successfully market it in a way that can result in a beneficial partnership, please drop me a line at williamchasterson at gmail dot com.
